Chinese Dragon Dance

The dragon represents wisdom, power, wealth and a very important aspect of Chinese Culture. This year being a Dragon Year, dragon dances are in the spotlight locally and worldwide. Little Miss and I watched the most spectacular dragon dance performance ever  at Kerry Parkside amidst the drizzling rain.

During the Dance, a dozen or so performers hold the dragon up on poles. They raise and lower the Dragon making him “dance” as they wind through the masses to the sounds of horns, drums and gongs. It is customarily performed along with Lion Dancers (which performed great acrobatic moves), at some moments the music were getting louder, the dragon and the lions were doing simultaneous movement all ending in a burst of confetti and salad leaves!

My daughter and her friend went to touch the lions at the end of the performance for good luck, they were all giggly since they can only touch the backside 🙂

Enjoy the photos.
